Elijah Morrison has signed a new two-year contract with Bristol City, extending his stay at his hometown club until the summer of 2028. The 20-year-old wide player, whose previous deal was set to expire this season, has now secured his long-term future at Ashton Gate.
Morrison expressed his delight at the agreement, which was announced on Monday evening. "I'm really pleased to sign a new contract," he said. "This is my hometown club, and I love being a part of it." The academy graduate, born in Bedminster, joined the club's Under-16s after being scouted and has been a regular in training with the senior setup under successive managers.
His immediate ambition is clear. "My focus now is to keep pushing myself and try and break into the first team," Morrison added. Head coach Michael Skubala has been a consistent presence in his development this season, with Morrison featuring for the Under-21s while continuing to train with the senior group. Sporting director James Ellis highlighted the player's progress, stating the club is delighted to keep him and excited to see his development over the coming years.
Academy roots and senior steps
Morrison's journey with Bristol City began in the academy, where he quickly made an impression. He trained regularly with the first team at just 16 years old and made his senior debut as a substitute in a Carabao Cup tie against Lincoln City. His first league appearance followed as a late substitute in a 2-0 Championship win over Rotherham United at Ashton Gate in the penultimate game of the 2023/24 season.
He was a key figure for the Under-18s that same campaign, helping them finish second in their league group and reach the FA Youth Cup semi-final. His form earned him a call-up to the England Under-18s squad, where he featured in wins over Northern Ireland and Morocco as the young Lions won the inaugural Tri-Nations Trophy. He signed his first professional contract in March 2023.
Gaining experience on loan
To accelerate his development, Morrison spent part of last season on loan with Forest Green Rovers in the National League. He made eight appearances under manager Robbie Savage, gaining valuable competitive experience. Since returning, he has been a fixture for the Under-21s and was part of the first-team squad that travelled to Spain for a pre-season training camp.
His only senior start to date came in the first round of this season's Carabao Cup, a victory over Milton Keynes Dons in August. He also made three substitute appearances in the league last term as Bristol City reached the Championship play-offs.
Squad context and what's next
The new deal for Morrison comes as Bristol City manage the contract situations of several first-team players. Confirmation of his extension means only a handful of players in and around the senior squad have deals expiring at the end of this campaign, with Joe Williams and Jason Knight among the most notable. The club has confirmed no agreement has been reached with Knight, while Williams has stated he is relaxed about his situation as he builds fitness after a long injury layoff.
His development will be key as the team prepares for its next fixture, an away trip to Charlton Athletic on 10 October. Fans can see all upcoming games on the club's fixtures page.
Elijah Morrison will continue his daily work under Michael Skubala at the Robins High Performance Centre, aiming to force his way into the matchday squad. Supporters can follow his progress and that of the entire squad as the season continues.
