Bristol City have completed the loan signing of Rio Cardines from Crystal Palace. The 20-year-old full-back will spend the entire season at Ashton Gate.
Cardines arrives as the club's ninth signing of the summer transfer window. Manager Michael Skubala described the Trinidad and Tobago international as a "very exciting young player" who can play on either flank. "He's a young man that Crystal Palace think very highly of," Skubala told the club's media team. "He's got some international experience already, so he's a very good prospect."
Cardines offers a different profile to the existing defensive options. He is an attacking full-back known for his energy, and his ability to play on both sides provides key cover. Last season, he made his senior breakthrough at Palace, appearing in the Premier League, Europa Conference League, and Carabao Cup. His 11 caps for Trinidad and Tobago add a layer of experience beyond his years.
Skubala highlighted the importance of this specific addition. "It was really important," he said about adding depth at full-back. "We know it was an area that we need to add through this window to support that." The manager also noted Cardines's character, calling him humble and hard-working, and stated the player is "ready to go."
The arrival of Cardines and eight other signings has created a larger, more competitive group at the Robins High Performance Centre. This follows feedback from senior players last season who felt there wasn't enough competition for places. The current squad now has multiple options in defensive areas, with players like George Tanner capable of playing both inside and wide.
In contrast, departures have been minimal. Only three senior players have left permanently: Sinclair Armstrong (Göztepe), Ross McCrorie (Rangers), and Joe Lumley (Sheffield Wednesday). Jamie Knight-Lebel and Josh Stokes have left on temporary loans to Motherwell and Reading.
Skubala welcomes the challenge of managing a bigger squad. He calls it a "nice problem" that is essential for success. "The players are on board that it's going to be a competitive season for them," he explained. The schedule demands a strong squad, and players must now fight to keep their starting positions. Skubala believes this internal push is healthy for the players, the coaching staff, and the club's ambitions.
This depth will be tested immediately as City begin their Championship campaign. They face Millwall this weekend, a team that finished third last season before losing in the play-off semi-finals.
The loan move is a significant step for Cardines's development, offering him his first consistent run of senior football. For Bristol City, he provides a direct, energetic option from full-back that differs from their other defenders. His signing addresses a targeted need for cover and variety in the defensive unit. With the transfer window now closed, the focus shifts entirely to performances on the pitch, starting with the trip to The Den. Fans can track the team's progress throughout the season in the standings.
