Wrexham are in talks to sign former Bristol City winger Anis Mehmeti from Ipswich Town. The 25-year-old Albanian international could move to the Racecourse Ground just seven months after his January departure from Ashton Gate.
Mehmeti is believed to be considering his options to secure more regular first-team football. He was not part of Ipswich's squad for their opening weekend fixture against Sunderland, despite having three years remaining on the contract he signed in January. Sources close to the player indicate that a loan move is the most likely outcome, but a permanent transfer has not been ruled out as discussions between the clubs continue.
The winger originally joined Bristol City from Wycombe Wanderers in January 2023 on a three-and-a-half-year deal. He scored 12 goals in 29 league starts during the 2024/25 campaign, winning the club's Golden Boot as City secured a top-six finish. His form attracted interest from other clubs, and with his contract running down, the decision was made to sanction a move to Ipswich Town last winter rather than risk losing him for free. The transfer fee received by Bristol City for Mehmeti was reported to be in the region of 1.5 million pounds, potentially rising with add-ons.
Should the move to Wrexham proceed, Mehmeti would link up with former teammate Zak Vyner, who also moved from City to the North Wales club earlier this year. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is said to be a keen admirer of Mehmeti's direct style and goal threat from wide areas. Wrexham have taken two points from their opening two league games this season, drawing with Cardiff City and Watford. The club's ownership, including Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have publicly backed Parkinson in the transfer market to strengthen the squad for a push up the Championship table.
Bristol City will host Wrexham at Ashton Gate on Tuesday, 24 November. The return fixture at the Racecourse Ground is scheduled for the final day of the Championship season on Saturday, 1 May. City head coach Michael Skubala, when asked about the potential move, stated that he is focused solely on his own squad but acknowledged Mehmeti's quality and the challenge Wrexham will pose.
Michael Skubala's side are looking to build on their own start to the campaign, having secured four points from their first two matches. The squad's current form and player statistics are available in our stats section. Bristol City are also active in the transfer market, with reports linking them with a move for a central midfielder before the window closes.
