Bristol City have strengthened their defensive options with the permanent signing of Danish full-back Signe Markvardsen. The 23-year-old arrives from HB Køge on a three-year contract.

Markvardsen joins a City side sitting 6th in the Championship with 7 points from their opening four games. They are three points behind leaders Swansea and have a positive goal difference, having scored seven and conceded six so far this season.

Signe Markvardsen is a 23-year-old left-footed defender who has spent the majority of her career with Danish champions HB Køge. She had two spells with the club, separated by a period in the United States where she combined football with studies at the South Florida Bulls. Last season, she was a regular starter in the HB Køge side that won the Danish A-Liga title, gaining experience in both the UEFA Women’s Champions League and the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup. At international level, Markvardsen has represented Denmark across various youth levels up to and including the Under-23 team.

Bristol City head coach Charlotte Healy expressed her delight at securing the defender. "We’re all delighted to get Signe through the door," Healy said. "She is a young left-footed full-back who has fantastic experience for her age both internationally and domestically." Healy also highlighted the value Markvardsen's top-level experience will bring. "Her experiences with her national team and in the Champions League will add real value to our squad."

The acquisition of Markvardsen represents Bristol City's seventh signing of the summer transfer window. Her profile as a left-footed defender with European pedigree addresses a specific need. The team's current form shows two wins, a draw, and a loss from their first four matches, a solid start they will look to build upon. Fans can view the updated squad list on the club site.

Markvardsen arrives as City prepare for their next Championship fixture, an away trip to face Southampton on September 12th. The team's recent form reads WWDL, and they will be aiming to close the gap at the top of the standings. Her integration into the matchday squad will be a key point of interest ahead of that match. Signe Markvardsen has signed a three-year deal at Ashton Gate and will wear the red and white of Bristol City.
