Bristol City were left frustrated by an early sucker punch as Oliver Arblaster’s fifth-minute volley handed Sheffield United a 1-0 victory at Ashton Gate. The result leaves Michael Skubala’s side 16th in the Championship table, with 14 points from their opening 11 games, a record of four wins, two draws and five losses. This latest defeat extends their winless run to two matches and leaves them nine points behind the league leaders.

Arblaster struck with a spectacular effort, reacting first to a cleared ball and firing a dipping volley from outside the box past Max O'Leary. City responded with pressure and had a penalty appeal waved away in the 12th minute when Yu Hirakawa went down under a challenge. Liam Kitching then saw a deflected strike cannon off the post for the visitors, while Jed Wallace, introduced at half-time, forced a key block at the back post soon after his arrival.

Chances go begging

Sam Bell glanced a header just over the bar and Wallace had another effort blocked as City pushed for an equaliser. Despite enjoying 53% possession, they managed only one shot on target all afternoon. O'Leary made a brilliant save low to his right to deny Ben Brereton Díaz in the 76th minute, preserving the slender deficit. The hosts' frustration was compounded by late yellow cards for Anis Mehmeti and United's Patrick Bamford in a scrappy stoppage-time period.

Skubala made three changes to his starting lineup, bringing in Hirakawa, Luke McNally and Ross McCrorie. He then introduced Wallace and Elijah Adebayo at the break, but the attacking reshuffle could not find a breakthrough. The defeat follows a 1-0 loss to Blackburn on Tuesday and a 1-1 draw at Charlton, meaning City's recent form over the last five games is two wins, one draw and two losses, but they have now lost their last two. For the season, they have scored 12 goals and conceded 15. Sheffield United's victory, their first in four league games, lifts them to 10th place.

Bristol City's next fixture is a trip to Stoke City on Saturday, October 24th at 3pm. That trip to the bet365 Stadium is the next challenge for a side looking to halt a slide that has seen them take just one point from the last nine available. Bristol City’s recent form reads two losses and a draw from their last three Championship outings. Sheffield United, meanwhile, will host Queens Park Rangers next weekend.
