Alex Scott’s £25m transfer to Bournemouth is a Bristol City record, a landmark fee that shows the club’s academy as a production line for top-tier talent. The move, completed in 2023, saw the midfielder progress from the Robins’ youth system to a Premier League side after two full seasons of Championship football.

Scott made 38 appearances for Bristol City in the 2021/22 campaign, contributing six goal involvements. His consistent performances across those two seasons cemented his reputation as one of the division's brightest prospects, ultimately leading to the record-breaking deal.

Championship's talent pipeline

Scott’s journey is part of a broader trend where the Championship serves as a key proving ground. A recent analysis highlighted an XI of former second-tier players, including Scott, now valued at a combined £750m. This group features England captain Harry Kane, who had loans at Leyton Orient and Millwall, and Jude Bellingham, whose one season at Birmingham City preceded a £25m move to Borussia Dortmund.

Other notable names include Marc Guehi, who joined Crystal Palace from Swansea City for £18m, and Levi Colwill, who developed on loan at Huddersfield Town. Michael Olise broke through at Reading before an £8m move to Palace, while David Raya progressed from Blackburn Rovers to Brentford and then Arsenal. The pathway remains active, with players like Morgan Rogers moving from Middlesbrough to Aston Villa for £8m after earlier Championship spells.

Bristol City's current context

This record sale provides a backdrop to Bristol City’s current push in the Championship. The Robins sit 8th in the table with 13 points from eight games, their form reading three wins and two losses from the last five. They head into their next match, away to 9th-placed Charlton on 10 October, on the back of consecutive wins, including a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace where Luke McNally and Scott Twine scored.

Dominic Ballard leads the team's scoring charts this season with three goals, a contribution fans can track alongside the full squad list. The club’s ability to develop and sell talent like Scott is a key part of its financial and sporting strategy as it aims for promotion. Supporters can follow the team's progress in the standings and view the upcoming fixtures, starting with the trip to The Valley.
